On December 20, 1891, William Robert Woodman died - one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a freemason.

Woodman was born in England in 1828. He studied medicine, worked as a surgeon during the coup of Napoleon III.

Woodman was appointed Grand Sword Bearer of the United Grand Lodge of England.

In 1867, Dr. Woodman was admitted to Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. In February of the following year, he became S.R.I.A. General Secretary. He was one of the editors of the magazine of this society "Rosicrucian". When Robert Little died in April 1878, Woodman became Supreme Magus.

In 1887, Woodman was awarded the honorary degree of "Exempt Adept" at the Isis-Urania temple of the Order of the Golden Dawn.

Woodman was engaged in gardening, and was so successful in this field that after his death, the Royal Horticultural Society erected a memorial at his grave in Willesden. Part of the Woodman library was transferred to S.R.I.A. Woodman appointed William Wynn Westcott as his successor to the post of Supreme Magus of S.R.I.A. Dr. Woodman died before the creation of the Second Order in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
